How to access Library Resources from an Off-Campus computer
Access to online databases and electronic
journals subscribed to by the Library is restricted to current
Florida Memorial University (FMU) students, faculty and staff.
These online resources are “ licensed from service
providers” who rely on IP-addresses or IP-ranges registered
to FMU for authentication of “authorized users.” This
means that users on-campus and connecting from a campus
IP-address are allowed access to the databases automatically,
but those using computers with a different IP number from
off-campus, are refused access. If you are connecting from off-campus,
the Nathan W. Collier library provides “authorized
user” authentication and access to these licensed databases
through the Web-Access-Management (WAM) system of the Library’s Millennium
Web-OPAC, by Innovative Interfaces.
Web-Access-Management (WAM) enables access to our online
databases by serving as an on-campus intermediary and provides
a valid IP address by passing information between off-campus
users and restricted online resources. Authentication
through this system requires a Login, thus ensuring compliance
with vendor restrictions. The Login used by the Library
is your campus ID-Card 14-digit
barcode number, which is also your Library
Account Number. You will only be required to authenticate
against WAM when accessing resources from off-campus.
WAM normally requires no configuration of your web-browser
on your part. From wherever you are, just click on the “Databases” link
from our web-site or the web-opac home page that
leads to a list of online libraryresources.
WAM should work with all standard Web-browsers, i.e., Netscape,
Explorer, AOL, etc., using any Internet Service Provider,
including dial-up or fast-access services.

Get a Florida Memorial University ID-Card and Library
Account:
A Florida Memorial University ID-Card
may be obtained by students during registration. Faculty
and staff may obtain an ID-Card from the Duplication Center.
You must have a valid University ID-Card with an activated
14-digit library number to be able to access the online databases; the
14-digit number on the front of the ID-card serves as your
Library Account Number and your Login Password to access
electronic resources from off-campus. Campus ID-cards
with barcode numbers with less than 14-digits (i.e., 9 or
12) will not authenticate with WAM or allow remote access
to databases. These older cards must be replaced with new
14-digit barcode campus ID-cards, to obtain a library account
and authorized privileges.

Connecting from Off-Campus :
You need a computer with an Internet connection and a Web-browser.
- Navigate to the Library Web-site: http://www.fmuviv.edu/library or
to the Library’s Millennium Web-OPAC home-page: http://library.fmuniv.edu .
- From either of the above locations, select the Databases link.

- Enter your Name as printed on your
University ID-card.
- Your Barcode password is the 14-digit number on the front of your ID-card.

All other electronic resources are available to only current
FMU students, faculty and staff by way of your campus ID-card,
as described above. These resources include:

Can’t get past the prompt for barcode to the actual database:
There may be some discrepancy between the information you
are entering and your profile in the library database. First
try to verify that your entry is correct by typing it at
the “My Library - Patron Record ” link on the
home-page of the Millennium Web-OPAC. If you cannot bring
up your record, verify your barcode at the Circulation Desk.

Inability to connect: “trying,” “host not found,” etc.
This is frequently a server problem, located in any number of places ; your ISP, the library server, the college network server, any number of connections along the way, or even the database host-server.
- If you cannot reach the library’s web-site home page , the college network server may be down, or busy. Call the Library Systems & Technology Office at 305-626-3649 or the Circulation Desk at 305-626-3640 for details.
- If you’ve reached the library’s web-site home page, the college network server isn’t the problem.
Check other connections or locations (i.e.,
try the Library’s Web-OPAC home-page, or other databases)
to try to isolate the problem, if you know that the university
network server is working.
- If you’ve reached the library’s web-opac home-page, but cannot connect to the Databases , the library’s Millennium server may be down, or busy. Call the Library for details.
- If you cannot reach the library’s
web-opac home-page , the FMU network
server may be down, or busy. Call the Library for details.
“All ports in use…” Another possibility is that the library has reached capacity on the number of simultaneous users allowed on that particular database. Trying another database, as noted above, will also help determine if this is the case. If so, try again a little later.

Time-Out of Database Connection:
Generally, many databases will time-out (i.e., disconnect) after 10-15 minutes if there has been no search activity in that time. Some databases will display a message to tell you that they have done so and will ask for a username and password to reconnect. If this happens, ignore this request and return to the library’s databases page. To reconnect, click on the link for that database.

|
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Please note: MS Internet Explorer version 4 is not compatible with the library's electronic resources. Version 5.5 may require a service patch to function properly. Version 6 is recommended.
Download Internet Explorer.

Note: Many versions of the cobranded Internet browsers provided by Internet service providers, such as AOL, MSN and CompuServe, are NOT compatible with the library's electronic resources. You may continue to use AOL, MSN or CompuServe for access, but once you have connected to the Internet, you should minimize the AOL, MSN or CompuServe window and open a regular (non-cobranded) version of Netscape Navigator or MS Internet Explorer. |

Plug-ins and Helper Applications
Some files and documents within the electronic resources and online databases require the use of additional plug-ins and helper applications. These programs allow you to read full text images, view graphics and videos, hear audio files, etc. Below are some of the most frequently required programs which can be downloaded free of charge.

Adobe Reader
Adobe Reader is required to view *.pdf documents. PDF (Portable Document
Format) is a universal file format that preserves the fonts, formatting, colors,
and graphics of a source document file, allowing you to view it in its original
