Serials are located on
the first floor of the library. Current issues of scholarly,
peer-reviewed academic journals are arranged by subject in
the serials reading room. Serials do not circulate outside
the library. Library staff is always available to assist users.
Although the terms periodical, journal, serial, and magazine
have slightly different definitions, they are often used interchangeably.
They are published on a regular basis (weekly, monthly, annually,
etc.) and contain articles written by various authors.
A journal contains peer-reviewed or scholarly articles written
by scholars while a magazine contains more popular articles
often written by journalists. The terms periodical and serial
are more generic and refer to all types of these materials.
Newspapers
Newspapers owned by the library are arranged alphabetically
in the Serials Room. The Library subscribes to about 30 newspapers,
including papers from the State of Florida and some U.S. cities,
as well as some international newspapers. The Newspaper Collection
is located on the first floor of the Library. Backfiles of
some of the newspapers are available on microfilm.
